I design, build and ship mobile apps. End to end.

I'm Avinash Koirala, a developer in Roseville, CA, just outside Sacramento. Building mobile apps is my hobby, what I do for fun with my own time. I take each one from a blank Figma file all the way to the App Store: design, React Native build, backend, on-device ML, store submission and everything that comes after it.

Four are live right now, on both the App Store and Google Play, weekend projects that happen to have real users. Eighteen years of engineering habits sit underneath all of it.

Real apps. Live in the store. Built for the fun of it.

These are personal projects, built on my own time. Everything in them is mine end to end product, interface, code, backend, store listing and updates.

Birdly AI

Point your camera at a bird and get an identification in seconds common name, scientific name, family, habitat, geographic distribution, diet, physical characteristics, behavior, lifespan, conservation status and a handful of genuinely interesting facts.

  • Classification runs entirely on-device

    A TFLite classifier plus a bundled species database do the identification locally no round trip to a server, and it works with no signal at all.

  • Firebase does the rest

    Auth, Firestore, Cloud Messaging and Storage handle accounts, sync, notifications and media, so the whole backend stays serverless.

  • Shipped solo, end to end

    Interface designed in Figma, built in React Native, submitted and maintained by me, including privacy declarations, age ratings and every update since launch.

Case Tracker: US Immigration

My flagship app. People add their USCIS receipt numbers once, and it tracks every case for them pushing a notification the moment a status changes, instead of making them reload a government website every morning.

  • Automatic tracking against official USCIS data

    Up to 100 cases per account, refreshed on their own, with instant alerts on any status change across form types from N-400 to I-130.

  • Still shipping

    Actively maintained at v1.3.3, with a built-in citizenship quiz rebuilt for the 2025 USCIS civics test as the rules changed.

Kids Games 3-5 No WiFi

A dinosaur-themed offline learning app for ages 3 to 5 paint, early math, letter tracing, shapes and words, wrapped in a world small kids actually want to stay in.

  • Fully offline, by design

    Nothing loads from the network. It works on a plane, in a car, in a waiting room which is exactly where a 4-year-old needs it.

  • Built for the 3 to 5 age band

    Difficulty steps by age, targets are big enough for small hands, and there is no way to wander out of the app by accident.

Pujari Go

Connects families with verified Hindu priests for pujas, havans, weddings, naming ceremonies, house blessings and festival rituals browse profiles and specialties, check availability, and arrange everything directly with the Pujari.

  • Search by distance, or connect remotely

    Set a service radius against live map data to find verified Pujaris nearby. When nobody is close enough, the app surfaces Pujaris available remotely instead.

  • No middleman, nothing charged in the app

    Profiles, availability and private in-app messaging only. Arrangements happen directly between the two people, and it's free on both sides.

02 — Off the clock

What I like building.

The short version of why I keep doing this on weekends, and what I gravitate toward when nobody is assigning the work. The full history is in the resume.

  • It starts with a real problem

    Every app started as something that genuinely annoyed someone a case that needed watching, a preschooler with no signal, a bird nobody could name, a priest for a family ceremony. That's a better reason to build than a portfolio slot.

  • Offline-first, on-device

    My favourite constraint is "it has to work with no signal." Bundled databases, local classifiers, no round trip. Birdly's entire classifier runs on the phone.

  • Solo, end to end

    Figma file through App Store review, including the parts nobody volunteers for privacy declarations, age ratings, release notes, review replies. Doing all of it is half the fun.

  • Eighteen years in, still building

    I wrote my first production code in 2006 and haven't really stopped since. The tools changed completely; the habit of shipping something real people actually use didn't.

  • Away from the screen

    Most of my winter weekends end up somewhere in the Sierra, the mountains are about ninety minutes east of home, which is hard to argue with.

  • What I like tinkering with

    On-device ML, offline-first apps, and small tools that do one thing properly. If a problem can be solved without a server, that's the version I want to build.

04 — Background

Eighteen years of deep roots.

When I'm not coding, you'll find me chasing waves, carving turns on the mountain, or on a soccer pitch somewhere and usually planning the next trip. That same restless energy has driven eighteen years of building for the web, since 2006 and long stretches owning production systems end to end.
